What can we help you with?

Sheffield became famous during the Industrial Revolution, a time when machines and factories changed the way people lived and worked. The city became a leader in metalwork and steel-making.
In the 1800s, Sheffield’s cutlery industry (making knives, forks, and spoons) grew very quickly. The steel made in Sheffield was high quality and was sold across the world.

Sheffield also developed new types of steel, including stainless steel, which is used everywhere today. Because of this history, the nickname “The Steel City” became well known. Today, Sheffield still has advanced manufacturing and engineering work, but it is also known for its creativity, art, technology, and green spaces.

Sheffield is the home of Sheffield FC, the world’s first football club, founded in 1857.

The city also has two major football teams:

  • Sheffield United (red and white), who play at Bramall Lane

  • Sheffield Wednesday (blue and white), who play at Hillsborough Stadium

Football is an important part of life in the city, and many people support one of these teams.

Every year, Sheffield welcomes visitors from around the world for the World Snooker Championship.

This event takes place at the Crucible Theatre, located in the city centre. The tournament has been held in Sheffield since 1977 and is one of the most important snooker competitions in the world.

Many well-known people were born in Sheffield or have lived here.
