Staying Safe

Everyone has the right to feel safe.

This page explains how to get help in an emergency, how to contact the police, and how to report crime or unsafe behaviour.

The police in the UK are here to help everyone, including asylum seekers and refugees.

What can we help you with?

If you need the police but it is not urgent, call 101.

Examples of non-emergencies:

  • Your property has been damaged

  • You want to give information about a crime

  • You have a question for the police

101 is for advice, information, or reporting when the situation is not dangerous.

If you need the police in an emergency, call 999.


Ask for “Police”.

You can ask for an interpreter and say which language you speak.

Examples of an emergency:

  • Someone’s life is in danger

  • Violence is being used or threatened
  • A crime is happening right now

A hate crime is when someone is abusive or harms you because of:

  • your race

  • your religion

  • a disability

  • your sexual orientation

  • your gender identity

How to report a hate crime:

  • Call 101 to tell the police

Or

  • Report online through True Vision . You do not have to give your name. It is confidential.

Or

  • Call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111

Please report hate crime even if you are unsure, support is available.

Anti-social behaviour means actions that cause problems or distress in your community, such as noise, threats, or damage.

If you are experiencing anti-social behaviour:
