Community

Sheffield is a friendly and welcoming city.

Whether you are new or have lived here for a while, there are many ways to meet people, join activities, and feel part of the community.

What can we help you with?

If you are new to Sheffield, try these first steps:

  • Visit a community centre for advice, classes, and social activities

  • Go to free or low-cost local events to discover Sheffield’s culture

  • Use the Sheffield Directory to find support, ESOL classes, and family activities

Welcomes places

Welcome Places are council, community, and volunteer-run spaces. They offer a range of help and support. A Welcome Place is any place open to the public that offers a warm welcome and some support. It may be run by a charity, a local group, or the council.

Many of these places are on the Sheffield Welcome Places map.

It lets everyone find a welcoming smile, a place to sit, enjoy a little company, get warm and stay warm.

What can you expect in a Welcome Place?

  • A friendly warm welcome and a smile every time you visit.
  • Being treated equally, with dignity and respect.
  • Feel safe – groups and organisations will be expected to adhere to their own safeguarding policies and ensure that all staff and volunteers are briefed on these procedures.
  • Confidentiality – Data protection of individuals details.
  • A non-judgemental space; whatever the reason individuals have for needing to come in, they will be treated the same and never judged.
